Piper PA-28 Cherokee Arrow 200
American sport plane
One of Piper's best-selling products in recent years is the PA-28 Cherokee. With this type, Piper definitively abandons its line of traditional high-wing aircraft and offers users an aircraft that is just as reliable, but even more convenient for training.
The first production Cherokee aircraft left the assembly hall in February 1961. By the summer of 1969, an average of 12.5 aircraft were being produced per day in 2- to 4-seater and 6- to 7-seater versions in at least five basic models. By the beginning of 1970, a total of 14,100 units of these five models had been produced, with the most successful model being the 140 C (two to four-seater) with 5,500 units produced.
Recently, the Cherokee was modernized with a retractable chassis and received the Arrow 200 designation. The Arrow 200 is structurally identical to the 180 E model, it has been modified for a retractable chassis and the drive unit can be replaced with a more powerful one (200 hp) if desired.
Differentiating the entire range of models is done by a number that indicates the number of horses, engine unit and a letter that indicates the modification, i.e. 140 C, 180 E, 235 D. Only the six- to seven-seater bears the designation Six.
TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
The Piper Cherokee Arrow 200 is a four-seater all-metal self-supporting low-wing with three-wheeled retractable landing gear.
The wing with a characteristically bent leading edge is single-span, covered with sheet metal including ailerons and flaps; only the edge arches are laminated. For a better distribution of aerodynamic forces, the wing is crossed by 2°. The proven NACA 652-415 laminar airfoil was used.
The hull, angular in the lower part and rounded in the upper part, is made up of two building units. The front part up to behind the cabin is a robust compartment, the rear "cone" is a half-shell. The comfortable cabin with four richly upholstered separate seats has efficient heating and ventilation. Steering is double, steering wheel. On request, the dashboard can be equipped with all the necessary instruments for flying without vision, throttle control and propeller settings are on the panel in the middle.
Tail surfaces. The bow keel surface, firmly built into the hull, is a beam structure, the leading part is coated with smooth sheet metal, the rest of the coating is pushed in (signed). The steering wheel is similar, the entire cover is enforced. The rectangular floating elevator is continuous with a combination of trim balance and static balance (weights in the fuselage). The edge arches of both rudders are laminated. The profile of both tail surfaces is symmetrical.
The landing gear consists of a three-wheeled hydraulically retractable undercarriage with an electrically controlled pump. The bow landing gear with oil-pneumatic shock absorbers retracts to the rear and is equipped with a 5.00 x 5 wheel. The main landing gear, also with oil-pneumatic shock absorbers, retracts to the hull, leaving the wheels uncovered. The 6.00 x 6 wheels have disc brakes.
Engine group. A Lycoming IO-360-В1Е flat air-cooled four-cylinder engine of 180 hp at 2700 rpm drives a Hartzell two-bladed all-metal constantspeed propeller with a diameter of 1.93 m. An optional Lycoming IO-360-С1С engine of 200 hp is installed at 2700 rpm with a propeller with a diameter of 1.88 m. The fuel is in two wing tanks with a total volume of 189 l. The entire engine cover is made of laminate.
Coloring. The basic white color of the entire aircraft is combined with two different colored stripes, the upper one of which goes into the rudder. There is a narrow gap between the stripes. Above the top bar there is again a narrow gap and a line of the same color as the bottom bar. The propeller cone is the same color as the upper stripe. The Piper lettering behind the cab is the same color.
The registration mark is white on both sides of the fuselage. The back side of the propeller blades is matte black. The color combinations of both stripes consist of 20 shades for a total of 42 combinations(l). The interior of the cabin harmonizes harmoniously with the exterior colors; is offered in six shades.
